We Think About Drying Time First

Hobbesginsberg is a drywall shop working out of University Ave in Riverside. We hang board, tape it, finish it and match texture, and the thing we plan a job around before anything else is how long each coat is going to take to dry in the room it is going into.

That sounds like a small detail to build a business on. It is not. Nearly every drywall complaint we get called out to fix traces back to a coat that went on top of one that was not finished drying, and out here that mistake is easy to make because the surface tells you it is ready long before the middle is.

What Inland Air Does

Joint compound dries by giving its water up to the room. The drier and warmer the air, and the more it moves, the faster that happens. Riverside gives you low humidity through most of the year, long stretches of heat from June onward, and a Santa Ana that will strip moisture out of a room in an afternoon.

In practice that means we get more done in a day here than a crew on the coast does. A finish coat in the morning and another in the afternoon is normal in August. In a shaded north room in January it can be a full day between coats, in the same city, on the same kind of house.

Where It Goes Wrong

Fast surface drying produces a skin. Under the skin the bed coat is still holding water, particularly in the thicker mud behind paper tape and in a deep fill. Coat over that and the water leaves slowly through the finish over the following weeks, the joint shrinks as it goes, and a hairline crack opens along the tape line. The homeowner sees it two months after the painter has been paid and reasonably assumes the house is moving.

Most of the time the house is fine. The schedule was wrong.

How We Work

We judge dryness by colour rather than by touch, because compound goes uniformly bright white only when the water is actually out of it. We use setting compound where the timing has to be certain, on deep fills, on same day patch work, and in garages and additions with no climate control. We mix looser in hot weather and work shorter runs so the mud does not stiffen on the hawk before the joint is wiped.
